MOGA - Memphis Obstetrics and Gynecological Association Receives Re-Accreditation for East's Mammography Services

published 1/12/12

Memphis Obstetrics and Gynecological Association, PC (MOGA) has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR, headquartered in Reston, VA, awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review of the practice.  Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.  They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment.  The surveyors report their findings to the ACR’s Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.  The ACR is a national organization serving over 32,000 radiologists, oncologists, and physicists with programs focusing on medical imaging and radiation oncology.

MOGA began offering screening mammography at its east Memphis office, located on the campus of Baptist Women’s Hospital, in October of 2008.  According to Ami Jennings, Director of Practice Operations for MOGA:  “This was another opportunity for us to create a higher level of service and convenience for our patients.  According to the latest statistics, around one in every eight American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.  This encompasses about 12% of the female population.  We hope that by offering the screening mammography service within our own practice, we will encourage more women to have this performed.”

The system used at MOGA incorporates digital Computer-Aided-Detection (CAD), which highlights characteristics commonly associated with breast cancer.  When activated, it flags abnormalities to help the radiologist detect early breast cancer.  CAD is, in essence, a second set of eyes to support and enhance the radiologist’s judgment.  Digital mammography is much faster than traditional film mammography, is analyzed on a monitor, and stores the images electronically.  This allows the radiologist to better manipulate the image in order to see the breast more clearly.

The practice also began offering screening mammography services at its Wolfchase office in March of 2011, and services there are accredited as well.

Memphis Obstetrics and Gynecological Association (MOGA) is the largest private-practice provider of women’s healthcare services in the Memphis area, with offices at St. Francis-Bartlett, Methodist-Germantown, Baptist Women’s Hospital, and in Southaven.   For more information on MOGA, visit them on the web at www.mogamd.com, follow them on Facebook or Twitter, or call (901) 843-1500.

MOGA – Memphis Obstetrics and Gynecological Association Celebrates Twenty-Five Years of Service
Employees Hold Commemorative Festivities at Memphis Zoo

published 11/3/11

What began as a small dream has now grown into the largest private practice provider of women’s healthcare services in the Mid-South area.

With a small office and a skeleton staff, Drs. H. Leigh Adkins and John O. Gayden, along with Administrator Robert Burns, formed Memphis Obstetrics and Gynecological Association (MOGA) in 1985.

“Twenty-five years later,” says Dr. Gayden, “we are comprised of twenty-two physicians, five nurse practitioners, and around a hundred employees.  The little office with a skeleton crew has grown into a major provider of care, covering three hospital systems and a wide geographic area.”

Physicians, staff members, and their families gathered at the Memphis Zoo on the afternoon of Sunday, October 16, for a celebration of the group’s history and accomplishments.

As nearly 400 individuals gathered at the Memphis Zoo’s Primate Pavilion for the celebration, Drs. Adkins and Gayden shared their appreciation to all who have worked over the years to bring to this point.

According to Dr. Gayden:  “We learned through trial and error, and that’s how we came to where we are.  Everything we learned, we learned the hard way.”   Gayden recounted how MOGA was the first OB/GYN private practice to use the services of nurse practitioners, which allowed the physicians to place a better focus on deliveries in the hospitals.  Other accomplishments included being on the Memphis forefront of using 4D ultrasounds, Lite-scans for breast imaging, and the offering of patient education classes.

One of the things which has set MOGA apart over the years, and continues to do so, is its vast array of medical services, many of which are not often provided on-site within a women’s health practice.  These services include hysterosonography, colposcopies, LEEP procedures, and bone densitometry (DEXA) scans.  Mammography is now offered at the Baptist Women’s and Wolfchase locations, and MOGA’s cosmetic services, offered at the Germantown office, include treatment for hair removal, skin rejuvenation, and spider veins.

MOGA also recognized those staff members who have served with the practice for five, ten, fifteen, and twenty years.  Length-of-service awards were given as follows:

Twenty Years:    Kathleen Stiles
Fifteen Years:     Linda Childers (FNP) and Stephanie McCollum
Ten Years:          Ashley Clanton, Carolyn Gann, Terri Head, Shawn Leslie, and Kelly Pfrommer (FNP)
Five Years:         Nicole Altman, Danita Clark, Tish Hickman, Jenny Lamb (FNP), Kristy Martin, Amanda McGee, Lori Robbins, Susan Smith, Cheryl West, and Cheria Wilkins

Following the festivities, the physicians, staff members, and their families enjoyed a leisurely afternoon at the zoo.

Memphis Obstetrics and Gynecological Association, PC (MOGA) maintains offices at Wolfchase, Methodist-Germantown Hospital, Baptist Women’s Hospital, and in Southaven.   For more information on MOGA, visit them on the web at

The mammography services offered at the Wolfchase office  of Memphis Obstetrics and Gynecological Association, PC (MOGA) recently received accreditation from the American College of Radiology.

.
Patients of MOGA who wish to schedule their annual screening mammogram may call (901) 843-1500 and select the option for either the Wolfchase or Baptist Women’s Hospital location.
